I have had the pleasure of interviewing a wonderful creator of beautiful custom handbound journals. Let’s find out more about this talented creator. First we will ask some random ice breakers and then get into her process and experiences. I know you’ll enjoy Jessie Euell Bonet‘s art and this interview. Here we go!
What superpower would you like to have? And why?
I’ve recently become very interested in the powers of The Flash. Traveling to places, reading books and learning new things in the blink of an eye. Those powers would allow me to learn, experience and do so much more in the limited amount of time we have in life.
And who is your favorite fictional character and what is your favorite movie?
My favorite fictional character is Xena. I don’t really have a favorite movie but a few that I love are The Lion King, Sister Act, and Long Kiss Goodnight.
You have created great products and feedback on Etsy. For those who don’t know what is the name of your company and what do you create?
The name of my company is Dorky Creation. I create hand bound journals that can be used for scrapbooking, travel, recipes or whatever a person chooses. My journals usually have a theme throughout whether it’s based on colors, patterns or even a favorite movie/character. I include pockets and envelopes to place pictures, tickets stubs, and other keepsakes.
How did you come up with the name dorky creation?
I originally wanted something with the word paper in it. However, as I thought about future projects I would like to explore, I realized I didn’t want to only make paper creations. My husband and I have talked about doing collaborations as well. So I knew that not all my creations would have to do with paper but I knew that the majority of them would be interesting (at least to me) and somewhat dorky.
What was your inspiration for creating journals?
A couple of years ago I decided to try my hand at creating a journal/scrapbook as a baby shower gift for my friend. After that first book, I had more ideas for journal creations and it just kept going from there.
What has been your favorite part about creating them?
My favorite part is creating the covers of the journals. When I first began I mostly used decorative paper. As my journals evolved I got more into mixed media and began painting the covers and adding metal items, wooden trinkets and whatever else I could to really bring the theme of the journal to life.
What was your first journal and how did it become a business for you?
The first journal I made was the baby journal for my friend. After that, I made two more as gifts for my friends and continued to make more. It was then that both my husband and my mother suggested I open up an Etsy shop. So I did.
What was your favorite journal so far?
That is such a difficult question for me. My top few would have to be the Harry Potter themed journals and the travel journal. I had so much fun using and exploring different mediums while working on those. The ideas for those journals were built up for so long before I finally created them so it was such a release and feeling of accomplishment and joy when they were completed.
Do you do special orders that can be customized for the buyer?
Are you looking to expand your creativity into different products?
I also make customized wooden signs but I look forward to expanding my products even further.
What advice would you give creators on starting their own service?
Make sure you enjoy what you do and keep exploring and learning and be patient.
